This medal recognised service of 30 days or more on general regional security operations in the greater Middle East from 7 December 2014.  It was awarded to NZDF personnel who deploy on general regional security operations in the Middle East.  It could also be awarded to those involved in supporting the training mission in Iraq from other locations in the Middle East.
