The United Nations Special Service Medal (UNSSM) was established in June 1995 to recognise military personnel and civilian police who serve in United Nations roles outside of the established peacekeeping missions or UN Headquarters.
 
This medal acknowledges contributions made by those working in specialised UN missions or agencies, such as the UNHCR or UNSCOM, or in specific operations that do not fall under the broader peacekeeping framework.
